She has always been involved in various outdoor activities, which include rock climbing, snorkeling, trekking and white water rafting. She joined The Tiara in August 2010, won two Miss Tiara titles and is now Femina Miss India South 2011. Rocking time with Hard Kaur...
Party abhi baaki hai mere dost... Hard Kaur took the stage with a storm and rocked everyone with Doob ja mere pyaar mein. She got the audience lose themselves to her amazing singing and grooves.

Dabangg Gang: Sonu Sood has joined Manish Paul as a co-host. Sonu ‘Cheddi Singh’ Sood is looking hot and handsome. He made his entry with Salman Khan’s trademark Dabangg step.

Sonakshi Sinha aka Lajjo followed him. The lady was truly a surprise treat for eyes. She danced to a number of Bollywood songs including Darling, Kajra Re, chura liya amongst others.

Sonakshi certainly sent the temperatures soaring high. But that wasn’t all, her performance was followed by a comic skit by popular comics Krushna Abhishek, Ali Asgar and Kapil.

The top 20 finalists walked the ramp in Rajesh and Anirban’s Ra' collection and revealed their dreams, desires and aspirations on stage. Ra’s collection has been specially designed for the magnificent Miss India 2011 finalists.

After the grand success of Shweta Dolli Femina Miss India South 2011, The Tiara has three more winners at Pantaloons Femina Miss India East 2011.Ankita Mohapatra was crowned Femina Miss India East 2011and also won the Miss East Beautiful Smile and Miss East Beautiful Skin. This Bhubaneswar girl trained by The Tiara first won Gladrags Megamodel 2009, and has been associated with this pageant training school since then. The second and third spot at Femina Miss India East 2011, were taken by Ruhi Singh and Smrity Singh both trained by The Tiara. Smrity also won the important title of Miss Perfect 10 and Miss East Golden Personality. Tiara Girls Dipna Patel and Sneha Akware won RMKV Miss East Photogenic and RMKV Wild Card Entry respectively at the same pageant. Annesha Chandra also trained by The Tiara was also in the top 5.
Pageant Coach Ritika Ramtri took the girls through the paces of pageant competition from their image consultation and grooming, to current events, question handling, mental preparation, public speaking, pageant walk and stance and other techniques to keep them ahead of the competition. Little wonder then that The Tiara did a hat-trick at Femina Miss India East 2011.

Shweta Dolli Trained by The Tiara wins Pantaloons Femina Miss India South 2011.
Standing Tall at 5'11", Shweta Dolli won Femina Miss India South 2011 on 22nd December 2010 .Coming from a defence background, she has had the opportunity to travel the country far and wide. She has always been involved in various outdoor activities, which include rock climbing, snorkeling, trekking and white water rafting. She joined The Tiara in August 2010, won two Miss Tiara titles and is now Femina Miss India South 2011. Shweta was trained intensively by Pageant Coach Ritika Ramtri of The Tiara and the results are there to see. Shweta Dolli now makes it to the top ten of Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2011.

Besides Pageant Training Ritika also writes feature articles for the Times of India, and DNA. She was the Editorial Coordinator of Pune Femina edition from 1998-1999. She has also written the script of a film on His Holiness; the Dalai Lama called The Spiritual Journey produced by AS Productions. Ritika presently writes the Ms. Manners column on etiquette for Pune Mirror (Times of India). She also does honorary counseling for the Indian Army, and is a Peer Group Leader for HIV/AIDS awareness and has participated in an International Workshop at Shillong for the same.

Ritika is also an Emcee and has to her compeered several noteworthy events like The Compaq Microline Fashion Show, The Indrani Herbals Fashion Extravaganza, The Bold & Beautiful CIFFA Graduation Show, The Woman Entrepreneur’s Fashion Fiesta, The Siber Fashion Institute Annual Graduation Show, Small Wonders-The Kids fashion Show, The Millennium Navy Ball at INS Shivaji in 2000 and The NDA Ball at NDA Khadakwasla in 2004, to name a few. She has also compeered radio programmes on All India Radio, New Delhi. Ritika has participated in several symposiums organized such by the Oracle Design Institute and Career Forum Institute. She was also on the grand jury of The School of Fashion Technology, Pune in past years.

Ritika Ramtri Kumar has been educated in various public and convent schools all over the country, owing to the transferable nature of her father’s job. She went on to do her graduation in Psychology and English from the Jesus and Mary College, New Delhi. Ritika’s educational qualifications include an M.A. (English), B.Ed and M.Ed. She has also done a Diploma in Personal Management from Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS), Pune and a Diploma in Advertising and Public Relations from the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM), Pune. Her work experience includes teaching assignments at St Joseph’s Convent, Bathinda and The Boys High School (Holy Trinity Annex), Allahabad for a period of six years. Ritika has also worked as Centre Manager – Academy of Charismatic Excellence and Partner – Stance Events and Coordination.

Ritika was trained in Soft Skills by Apex Institute in conjunction with Tack Training, UK. She has been in the training industry for more than twelve years. Ritika runs The Tiara a one-stop shop for training solutions. A decade of training individuals, pageant contestants and business houses, has helped her hone her skills and present a well balanced and integrated training package. It’s the end of the year again. Time to turn on the glitz and indulge in luxe ensembles that are high on the style quotient. “All things glittery are making a comeback, as stars take a shine to the festive look”, Minal Mirchandani, Proprietor Babe tells us. Eveningwear this Christmas and New Year has a relaxed feel. According to Minal the emphasis is on dresses whether knee length or a little shorter. “ They look formal and are enhanced with flounce and flair and Victorian accessories. Infact the 60s flared dresses are something that almost everyone can carry off,” she ponders aloud. Popular fabrics for these flirty little numbers are satin, chiffon, and velvet.
Essential colors include wine, gold, silver, bronze, red, maroon, navy, chocolate, tan, deep bottle green, purple, teal and turquoise and any type of limestone sequence. Gold is not the only metallic on offer, there are plenty of soft silver toned clothes around, from the palest shimmering dove grey ivory, to steel magnolia. Brown is making waves like never before. Red is still an excellent basic colour to have in your wardrobe. Christmas is a great opportunity to wear it, as it is one of the season’s biggest fashion colours (if red clothing is too strong a statement, consider an accessory instead). While black will always be fashionable to wear, don’t duplicate black items in your closet just because they’re on sale – beware the black rut.
Stretch dresses available in spandex, cotton stretch and jersey material make for a slender, tight fitting look. Bustiers with front and back boning for a corset-like shape are also popular this season. For the festive season, subtle metallic eveningwear with both vintage inspired jacquards and shimmering Lurex are also de rigueur. LBDs (little black dresses) are also must-haves. Choose from trapeze styles with added hemline flare or empire lines. These styles have child like baby doll elements, which are flattering to say the least. Baby doll dresses in satin also make the cut according to Minal and she recommends prints both abstracts and animal prints. “ Florals are passé”, she declares.
Velvet offers romantic looks that can move from day to evening with ease. Midnight blue is one of the best colours for velvet, as it retains a richness lost on pastel velvets, which are horribly fattening. Velvet is a lush fabric that is perfect for Christmas and New Year celebrations. Don’t be afraid to wear mini (although not too mini) dresses to parties and wearing tights is a good idea. If a dress is not for you, then seek out a skirt with an embellished hemline. Or go for trendy tunics and team them with either tights or narrow pants. The tunic look is especially apt for larger women. “Knee length and short suede skirts worn with halters are also haute this time around”, Minal says.
Finally add your accessories to make your look your own. If the outfit however is show stopping, keep your accessories minimum. Think of adding a streamlined shiny clutch or delicate ballerina slippers that compliment what you are wearing rather than compete for attention. Jewellery with rhinestones and diamonds are popular and add that special glitz for eveningwear. Chandelier earrings or a pretty brooch can also add some drama. Different shoes can make the appearance of an outfit look quite altered and present an opportunity to reflect your personality. Strappy, halter and platform shoes and sandals are popular this festive season. You can find these shoes in black, bronze and silver. Add a pashmina wrap or Jamevar silk stole on, then you're set for a fun and gorgeous night! Whatever you do have fun with your look. If you feel good ,you will look good. Confidence is the best accessory of all.

Moonlighting!

After a long day at the office, Madhulima Saha can't wait to get home. It's not a lack of love for her full-time job as a Marketing Executive. Nor is it because of a secret soap opera addiction. Madhulima is looking forward to sitting down, flipping open her laptop and starting her working day all over again for her second job which is copy writing. She is not alone, moonlighting has indeed become quite common these days. So is it tough? Madhulima says the greatest challenge people face in working two jobs is striking a balance- not only between the jobs, but also finding time for family, friends and relaxation. "If someone is spending 90 per cent of their time at work, then that doesn't create a healthy balance and it is likely they will burn out,'' she says. "Time management is absolutely essential”,she avers.

This is something Zubair Poonawala ,Consulting Partner at an established PR firm understands well. He also does catering for both corporates and individuals. Mughlai food is his forte. A professional bodyguard, every year during Ganpati he even works in an honorary capacity at Chowpatty Beach."People ask how I balance it all. I do this by maximising my time where I can”,he explains. People moonlight at extra jobs for different reasons. For some, the added income helps them keep afloat in shaky financial waters due to the rising costs of goods and services. For others, an increase in split families means supporting more than one household.While many people manage to strike a balance, this largely depends on the motivation for pursuing external work.Some people do it because they're entrepreneurial and they have a passion they want to pursue, but some people are doing it for financial reasons and are often burning the candle at both ends.

Moonlighting does have a downside, along with the benefits. Missing out on quality time with your loved ones, and not having much time for hobbies or relaxation can be draining, but there are those who have learnt to combat this as well . Puneet Shewani, a Call Centre Executive works only two hours a week for his E-commerce business,and earns well inspite of that. Model and Femina Miss India Finalist 2007 , Zoha Tapia is a qualified journalist and has worked with several publications,before she participated in the national pageant. Today she is doing several fashion shows for renowned designers like Rohit Bal, Satya Paul, Shobhaa De ,Rohit Verma and has even done a fashion sequence for the film ‘Fashion’. Infact she is going to leave shortly for the Columbo Fashion Week.Inspite of such a tight schedule,Zoha still finds time to freelance as a writer. “ It gives me creative satisfaction,and seeing one’s byline in print always gives one a high”,she says with a sparkle in her eyes.

Wuying runs her own specialty restaurant and also has a health club where she teaches aerobics and salsa. Feeding people and then keeping them fit comes easily to her,and she enjoys both equally. Anjana Mascarenhas runs her own boutique and in her spare time does nail extensions. She has always loved nails,but it was only on her last trip to the US that she was completely blown by the kind of nails done there. Inspite of her hectic schedule at her boutique she took time out to learn the art and craft of nail extensions ,by doing a course in Delhi. “ It was tough but very satisfying. Doing nail extensions is like physics. It’s a science ,every nail is different so every hand is a challenge”,she says. How different is it from designing clothes? “ Very as there you have the fabric and the person and the design just flashes across your mind ,but here you have to be very precise and follow technique”,she says.

Working a two-job balance

Balancing two jobs can be a tightrope act, but there are things you can do to make it work:
• Be extremely well-organised: When you're working long hours you want to be sure you're getting the most out of them;
• Strike a balance between work and play: leisure is as important as work time if you want to avoid overworking and burning out;
• Call on friends for help: If you're starting your own business, you're going to need help with business plans, websites, marketing and so on. Again, time is of the essence, so draw on the expertise of friends and colleagues if they're willing to offer it. Banish the temptation to procrastinate: This goes for your primary job as well as your secondary one. If you're more efficient at the former, it won't be spilling over into the time you've set aside for the latter. Don't let your second job jeopardize your main source of income.
• Try if you can to leave two hours between jobs just in case you need to stay late at the first. You don't want to burn your bridges at your first job or be late to the second.
• Expect to be really tired at first. But you will adapt to having two jobs as time goes on.
• Make sure you enjoy your second job, or you'll stress yourself out too much.
• Finally it’s important to know when you are over doing it. Remember all work and no play make you a dull person. If you work all the time and never relax you will suffer from career burn out.

After conducting clothing and jewellery exhibitions for the past sixteen years, she finally decided to take the plunge and start her little boutique about five months. She has been an immediate hit with both young girls who want to dress up for an Indian function and married women .Varsha Talera’s creative flair is rooted in a fiercely Indian family background and a minimalistic approach. She has developed a clear and sharp aesthetic and her signature lines are characterized by extreme simplicity, flawless lines, immaculate cuts and a perfect finish. Varsha’s panache and originality, her intuitive and original sense of style, combine with impeccable garment construction help create stunningly simple yet dramatic garments.

Diya Thakker tells us that Varsha’s eye for detail is fabulous. “I am very finicky about clothes and her finish and detailing are unbelievable. Besides it’s a pleasure to deal with her, she is so amiable”, Diya tells us.

Varsha believes in a luxe minimalism that is organic yet infused with color and detail- where the fabric functions as an important design element and not merely a canvas upon which embellishment is placed. “My ensembles always have a focal point, and I play up one feature to highlight it. I believe less is more”, she says. Embroidery is employed skillfully and ninety percent of it is hand embroidery. She also uses exquisite Jaipuri gota, gota patti, sequins, threadwork, mokaish and exquisite brocade borders to add that little extra to the garments. Her cuts and silhouettes are rather trendy and in keeping with the moment. She has used the Anarkali silhouette extensively. “Even though Anarkalis have been popular for the last six months, Pune is warming up to them only now. They definitely compliment the Indian figure”, she tells us. Varsha tells us that tunics have been in and will continue to be in, for sometime now.

Her vision is of an emerging global aesthetic and Varsha’s clothing easily translates across geographies and other artificially constructed boundaries - such as age, race and point of view. The line elegantly fuses the craftsmanship of skilled artisans with the needs of modem women around the world. A lot of foreigners like to buy from her, because they like the natural and understated feel of her ensembles. Varsha also does western wear but only to order. She likes to dabble with Indo western silhouettes and comes up with stellar creations.Varsha’s fashion statement is all about simplicity, combining a refined silhouette that touches on seasonal trends with clean lines and classic tailoring. If you are looking for mouthwatering and authentic Bengali cuisine then a trip to ‘Bong Connection’, is a must. The people who run the show, the Boses are originally from Kolkata.They moved to Pune, about 7 years ago for their children’s education, and started their first restaurant called Utopia in Kothrud. Just before Durga Puja last year, they decided to open ‘Bong Connection’, so that the people of Kondhwa and surrounding areas can also enjoy Bengali cuisine. It is a great relief for foodies who really miss Bengali food here in Pune. Be it seasoned mutton, fried fish, richly flavoured “Daal”, spicy “Khichuri” with dollops of ghee, or simply a platter of “mishti” (sweets), there is no matching Bengali cuisine.
The restaurant’s name is catchy and a lot of Bengalis have homed on to it .Today Bong Connection has a steady and loyal clientele. Sulotika Sahu, who was just passing by, saw the restaurant and popped in for a take-away. “The smell of fish cooked Bengali style, was quite tempting”, she tells us. The restaurant which is on three levels: garden, ground floor and first floor, is pleasant and minimalistic. It’s the food however that is stellar. The menu is enriched with regular Bengali vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods. During the Durga Puja special desserts, meals, savouries and all varieties of fishes are served.
The Chicken and mutton Kasha (sookha) are the best you can get in a restaurant. The dhokar dalna, potoler dorma filled with kheema, fish, and coconut, and the Paneer shukto are considered the "running items" in Bengali food and are in the ‘something special’ column of the menu. For starters try the Fish Kabiraji. It comes with a crusty covering and delicious fish inside. The liver curry is lip smacking as is the mutton curry Kolkata special.
The chops are also delectable. For the main course one can have the chicken rezala, chicken chap or a selection of Seafood in Jhal (thin gravy). You can also try the quintessential Radha Ballavi Dum Alu if you are a vegetarian. In winter you can look forward to peas kachori.The thalis (fish, chicken, mutton and veg) are interesting. They make the dishes with special care under the guidance of their proprietor Suchandra Bose, which makes them tastier. The sea food menu is truly incredible and you must try their fish in mustard gravy. Besides Bengali cuisine the restaurant also offers Chinese and Mughlai. Their Biryani is also very popular.
For desserts you can have kheer. “Our aim is to give people, home cooked food. We have separate gravies for separate dishes, just like home”, Bose tells us. Food from Calcutta is very famous and since Kondhwa is a cosmopolitan area, the food has been very well received, she tells us. The chefs are all from West Bengal, so you can be sure that the taste is authentic. The restaurant also does catering for parties, office canteens and you can even order regular tiffin from them. Their breakfast menu is delightful and features tasty Kolkata samosas, and puri alu among other dishes. The waiters are extremely helpful and it is indeed a great place for a taste of Bengal right here in Pune.

Top Three Winners at Femina Miss India East 2011 are Trained by The Tiara

Ankita Mohapatra Trained by Pageant Coach Ritika Ramtri of The Tiara wins Femina Miss India East 2011 for the third year in a row. The first two being Pooja Chopra and Unnati Davara.
After the grand success of Shweta Dolli Femina Miss India South 2011, The Tiara has three more winners at Pantaloons Femina Miss India East 2011.Ankita Mohapatra was crowned Femina Miss India East 2011and also won the Miss East Beautiful Smile and Miss East Beautiful Skin. This Bhubaneswar girl trained by The Tiara first won Gladrags Megamodel 2009, and has been associated with this pageant training school since then. The second and third spot at Femina Miss India East 2011, were taken by Ruhi Singh and Smrity Singh both trained by The Tiara. Smrity also won the important title of Miss Perfect 10 and Miss East Golden Personality. Tiara Girls Dipna Patel and Sneha Akware won RMKV Miss East Photogenic and RMKV Wild Card Entry respectively at the same pageant. Annesha Chandra also trained by The Tiara was also in the top 5.
Pageant Coach Ritika Ramtri took the girls through the paces of pageant competition from their image consultation and grooming, to current events, question handling, mental preparation, public speaking, pageant walk and stance and other techniques to keep them ahead of the competition. Little wonder then that The Tiara did a hat-trick at Femina Miss India East 2011.

Standing Tall at 5'11", Shweta Dolli won Femina Miss India South 2011 on 22nd December 2010 .Coming from a defence background, she has had the opportunity to travel the country far and wide. She has always been involved in various outdoor activities, which include rock climbing, snorkeling, trekking and white water rafting. She joined The Tiara in August 2010, won two Miss Tiara titles and is now Femina Miss India South 2011. Shweta was trained intensively by Pageant Coach Ritika Ramtri of The Tiara and the results are there to see. Shweta Dolli now makes it to the top ten of Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2011.

Collecting is a passion and collectors will spend a lot of money and time on this privilege. Isar Nabi Qureshi, is a hardcore music collector and Beatles buff. His collection of 400 plus record players, and over 15000 vinyl and shellac records amply illustrates this. His record collection, is eclectic to say the least, and encompasses a huge range of music, including Rock, Jazz, Country, Western Classical,Bollywood and all Indian and regional language records. It is his 5000 records strong Beatles collection however that he most reveres.
Isar who buys old record players and restores them, tells us that they are evidence of man's quest for perfect sound and ideally suited to listening to old music. The turntable is his pick and he has perfectly calibrated it and added amplifiers and equalizers, for a wonderful listening experience. Isar's love for music began when he was about 7 years old. It was at a Diwali fete that he won a mono Phillips record player and two Beatles EP records. " Those Beatles tracks had a really great effect on my perception of music" , he ponders aloud. Later in the 80s when records started going out of vogue, Isar went to Mumbai, and there at the Rhythm House he saw records being sold for Rs 20 each. It was then that he bought his first Beatles record, 'Revolver'. And thus began a lifelong passion for collecting their music. The movie 'The Birth Of the Beatles' , further fuelled this passion of his.
The Beatles were the most popular and accomplished musicians of the last century. These self taught musicians from Liverpool, England created music that continues to evolve in its form and depth . From their early days, to the music they created at the Abbey Road Studios, they gave the world true music .The bands first single "Love Me Do" released in October 1962. Their first appearance in the U.S. was in February 1964. They participated in several tours and live performances carving a permanent place for themselves. Isar's collection tracks the complete journey of the Beatles,. He has their best loved tracks like ,Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , Meet the Beatles, The Beatles Yesterday and Today, A Hard Day's Night, Rubber Soul , The White Album,Beatles for Sale, Love Songs, Oldies but Goldies, Beatles Rock N Roll and their last album Abbey Road to name a few ,on Capitol , Apple and Parlophone records.
He travels around the country to source these records. "It's a terrific investment, but its my passion ", he admits. Isar also has doubles , unused records and Beatles memorabilia. He is quick to add that nothing in his collection is for sale. "It's just for the listening pleasure of people", he clarifies. Isar shares his passion with anyone who wishes to rediscover the Beatles and their music, and has a constant stream of Beatles buffs visiting him . Infact when The Bootleg Beatles were touring Pune, they visited his home , to see his collection. A virtual treasure trove of Beatles trivia , he can tell you all about how the Beatles started their own record company, and the Paul is dead hoax. Harmony Through Dance

It may come as a surprise to most, that Revathi Salunkhe started out as an Indian Classical Vocalist. It was infact singing that brought her to India, several years ago . Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Revathi had learnt gymnastics, ballet ,Bharat Natyam, dance under Bill Evans, authentic movement under Erica Lorentz , and Dance Therapy from the Pratt Institute, New York. Singing may have been her first love, but it was only after marriage, and the birth of her daughter in 1993, that Revathi re-discovered dancing. It was at that juncture, through her initiative ISHA ( Indian Search For Harmony Through Art), now rechristened as EESHHA for numerological reasons , that she began teaching dance as a medium of expression in schools in the city.
Dance according to Revathi, is an understanding of the environment. It's a deeply meditative natural phenomena." My dance follows the body's natural rhythm within some intelligence. There are no strictures, just feelings guided by common sense", Revathi explains. Based on the five elements: air fire, earth, water, and space, Revathi's dance form can be best described as contemporary. She teaches it in a graded manner, over five levels, each of which takes 6 weeks. He dance depicts space , which is exploratory and free, air which helps the body flow and water which takes into account the pull and push of the magnetic field. The fourth level, fire is about going outside the body, and awareness of the soul. The fifth level which is earth is the most complicated and involves the four elements preceding it. It's a combination of both strong floor and aerial work. " Its about looking inwards , even when the movements are outwards", Revathi ponders aloud.
Dance indeed is a strong medium of expression. And Revathi has employed it successfully. She recently dramatized , the book Jonathan Livingstone Seagull by Richard Bach, at the Chandrasekhar Auditorium at the IUCAA. While the theme may have been from the book, it was set in the changing city of Pune. The motifs included the dhol and the malkhamb, which gave the dance drama a decidedly Puneri flavour. The next project on the anvil is Water , and one can look forward to seeing a great deal of art in the dance. " I am not an artist , I am a heartist", she is quick to clarify. And dancing from the heart, is what she does best.

Brunch with an Italian flair? We were intrigued. At Le Pizzeria Sunday brunch which starts at 11 AM, has a special menu with lots of salads, fruits and desserts. Especially popular with foreigners and Mumbaikars headed for a weekend off ,there's a decidedly energetic vibe to the place. The Sunday Brunch has a set menu with options .You can choose from an array of croquets ,crepes, pastas and pizzas. The wheat pastas and pizzas, without even a dash of flour are especially healthy , and sumptuous. the fresh fruit Mocktails and other decoctions add a dash of punch to the menu. The menu is succinct without being heavy. Raj Mehta of Le Pizzeria says, " Our brunch has always been a regular feature and very popular because of our extensive menu."

The repertoire includes their famous Rogan josh, mutton sukha, chicken makhani, Andhra chilli chicken, fish gassi and the like. The brunch which starts at 11 and continues till 5 is a long and leisurely affair. The salad counter is especially nice. You can make your own. Sip your favourite wine and top it off with sinfully rich mango gateaux, fresh mango marble mousse mango cheesecake and other delicacies from the amazing dessert table.

An Ode to our Motherland

On January 26,1950 amidst much rejoicing and fanfare our country became a Republic. In these 56 years, India has emerged as the largest successful democracy in the world with formidable achievements at an international level. And as we celebrate yet another Republic Day it is the time for introspection. A time to assess our achievements and our shortfalls. Our Parliament is the people's institution. It is the mirror and the voice of the people. Our Constitution has stood the test of time, and signifies the sovereignty of the people of India. India is perhaps the largest and most plural society in the world where people speak an array of languages and use a wide range of scripts. All the major religions – Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism - have enormous number of followers in India. India is the world's most complex and comprehensively pluralistic society, home to a vast variety of castes, tribes, communities, religions, languages, customs and living styles

It is also the time to seek inspiration from acts of bravery and patriotism and inculcate the spirit of nationalism. We must realize, the significance and the value of our freedom, only then can we contribute significantly . Amrita Thapar , Femina Miss India 2005 tells us that this is one time of the year, she bows her head down in complete humility and reverence to this great nation of ours. " My head and heart are filled with a deep sense of patriotism, and this day is indeed an ode to my country", she ponders aloud. Indeed it's a time for pride, joy and introspection. Manita Dhillon, a housewife says, " On Republic Day I try and look inwards and plan on what I can do for my country and its progress".

Indian secularism, is non-negotiable, and it is the mantra of our nation which was formed by the merging of over 550 princely states into a cohesive union. This ideal has guided India, successfully for the most part, for the last 56 years. There is sense of pan-Indian-ness which overrides other considerations. But there have been many challenges to the Indian state from other forms of identity politics--linguistic, ethnic and religious. Sumeet Mishra, SAP and Investment Consultant tells us that for him Republic Day is about reminding ourselves about our national identity, inspite of all the diversity. He feels that while gaining independence was the most important event in Indian history, the framing of the constitution was also a crucial milestone.
Shakun Sethi, Event manger and Fashion Choreographer says that the mood on republic day is euphoric. " It symbolizes freedom for me. As an entrepreneur also today I feel that the national climate is open and conducive to business", he explains. Jyotika Sirohi, a software engineer endorses this viewpoint and adds, " Republic Day seems to be the perfect time to refocus on nation building . It is the right time to contribute our mite in the journey of transformation of our country to a 'developed' nation. It is, therefore, essential to evolve action-plans to guide, motivate and effectively utilize the power of an entire to progress in all our endeavors". "Republic Day for me is tinged with the colour of freedom and the integrity of purpose", she sums up.

Exotic Destinations To Drive To

You have new shiny wheels and you want to test them out in am an idyllic locale, not too far from home. So what are you waiting for this weekend head out to the beaches the hills or even the woods. Breathtaking sights of sheer beauty mark the length and breadth of this beautiful state. Indeed Maharashtra with its imposing Sahyadris, with their steep hair-raising cliffs, sprightly waterfalls, snaking their way through ridges, mist shrouded forests which are the home of many exotic animals, is the paradise poets write about.

If you like to go back into time and history you can check out the various forts around Pune like Sinhagad, Lohagad, Visapur, Shivneri, Purandar, Rajgad and Raigad. Named after the lion-hearted general of Shivaji - Tanaji Malusare, Sinhagad the awesome Fortress of the Lion stands at a height of 1290 metres, only 25 kms. away from the city. Over 300 years ago, Tanaji, the Maratha warrior, and his army, with the help of ropes and giant lizards (ghorpuds), scaled the sheer precipice and silently stormed the Bijapur citadel at midnight, creating history. Lohagad and Visapur forts which are about 52 kms. away from Pune, atop an impressive hill, were built in the 18th century. Shivneri which 94.5 kms. away from Pune, is the birthplace of Shivaji. One of the interesting features of this fort is a mosque with two minarets which are joined by a graceful arch. Murud is famous for the fort of Janjira. The fort is built 2 kilometers in the sea , while Padmadurg - a fort built by Shivaji Maharaj is to the north -west of Janjira. Though not as big as Janjira, still Padmadurg is also a sea fort that can be visited and enjoyed. Truly, Murud Janjira and Padmadurg are the places to visit and enjoy on the weekends .

If you are fascinated by caves then Karla and Bhaja should be your destination. About 50-60 kms. away from Pune, these rock-cut Buddhist caves date back to 1st and 2nd century B.C. They consist of several Viharas (dwelling caves) and Chaityas (chapels) of the Buddhist monks. Their sheer rock faces provide the appropriate terrain for a rock climber to reach up to the white, fluffy clouds. Pune is also surrounded by a number of picturesque lakes which you can drive to , like Pawna, Panshet, Mulshi and Khadakvasla. Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgaon not only provide water to Pune but are also known for their picturesque locale. If you would rather take a trip to the wild side you could drive to the Nagzira Wild Life Sanctuary or the Tadoba and Nawagaon National Park. Malshej Ghat is for also famous for its dark woods and tigers , leopards , rabbits and peacocks etc.

Ofcourse if it's the hills and their pristine beauty that bewitch you head for Lonavala, Khandala, Matheran and Mahabaleshwar .Malshej Ghat situated on the border of Pune in the Sahyadri hills is really very attractive , especially when it is under dark clouds and heavy fog. Heavy fog and amazing waterfalls make it a wonderful monsoon get away. If you want to drive to a place with a religious significance then you can go to Bhimashankar ,122 kms. from Pune where you will find the elaborately carved Shiva temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of the country. A fair is held here annually during Mahashivratri. Another destination could well be Jejuri known for the famous temple of 'Khandoba' . Harihareshwar is one of the finest places in Konkan and is only 130 Kms. from Pune. This seaside place is truly enchanting.

So this next weekend don't sit in front of the idiot box.. Pack your overnighter , bundle your family in your car , or make your buddy sit behind you on your bike and head for an exotic destination. We are all going on a weekend holiday!
